Tandem Bicycle

Finite element analysis through CAD simulations for a tandem bicycle frame design.

brief

The challenge was to design a frame for a tandem bicycle and evaluate iteratively using FEA such that it is lightweight, unisex, has natural frequencies above 30Hz and has an effective life of at least 10 years.

outcomes

The final frame design met all the aforementioned baseline criteria. Solidworks Simulations was utilised, including static, fatigue and frequency studies. FEA techniques such as mesh refinement were used throughout to ensure the most accurate results. Through various iterations, improvements were made leading to a 30% increase in fundamental frequencies compared to the initial proposal and a 70% decrease in max stress, therefore significantly prolonging lifespan. By switching from 7075-T6 Aluminium Alloy to Magnesium in favour of a better strength to weight ratio, the mass of the frame was halved.
